Groan: John’s Love Life News in T:SCC Season 2

Okay, so here it is — the presence of John Connor’s new love interest in Leven Rambin, who plays a girl name Riley? (Read that article here) Apparently that wasn’t something the producers of the show came up with; instead, it was dictated to them by the suits at FOX. Yup, you heard that right — John is getting a human girlfriend in The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 2, and it’s because FOX wanted him to have one. I guess it was too much that FOX didn’t try to turn the show into some 90210 bullshit, but whatever, FOX, you’ve done so well with genre shows so far, right? You MUST know what you’re doing.

Anyways, back to the matter at hand. What to expect from TSCC Season 2 involving John, Cameron, and John’s new human girl, Riley? (Named after FOX chief Kevin Reilly, apparently.)

Via TV Guide:

• John’s new love interest, Riley (played by soap vet Leven Rambin) came at the behest of Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly, hence her soundalike name. Recalls Friedman of his conversation with da boss: “I said, ‘Yeah, maybe we could have a girl come in around Episode 8 or 9.’ … We compromised at Episode 2.”

• Rambin’s innocent high-school cutie serves a particular function for the producers. “Sci-fi shows get a little insular at times,” says Wirth. “It’s nice to see [our characters] interact with real people.” As such, Riley will not be privy to John’s special burden. “I was just as clueless as my character is,” Rambin says about joining the in-progress series.

• But how about some hot man-on-machine action, guys? We can’t be the only ones who have noticed the tension between John and metal-maid Cameron (Summer Glau). Wirth teased: “Every interesting relationship I’ve been in has been a triangle.” Oh, reeeallly? Is this the Swingtown panel?

• And why was Cameron so good at hanging with the teens at first, but later seemed more awkward about human behavior? “Summer’s character had been prepped for that particular situation, so it was almost like she had a script,” explains Friedman. “Once they jumped forward in time, though, she was as adrift as everyone else.”

• Is there a theme to the second season? Friedman offers one word: “Evolution.” Wirth gives a little more: “Sarah’s war is a lot grander and more complicated than she thought it was.”

Ugh. Network interference. Next thing you know, they’ll be introducing a whole group of high school “buddies” for John to bitch about the world with.

But see, if he gets a new cast of friends, maybe they’ll become John’s lutinents in the fight for the future like in T3

i was more intrested in the cameron/john intrest, not some human girl. but whatever fox, you tend to ruin everything you touch, just don’t ruin a great programme like terminatorSCC

I understand there’s money involved, here, but it’s tough for me to understand why in hell Fox has to get involved at all. The ratings are not going to roof just because of a love interest for John. He’s the savior of all mankind in the future, for Christ’s sake, so he doesn’t have time for this crap, whether it’s a love interest with Cameron or Reilly.

Well, I really do hate to sound like an alarmist, but there goes the show right after the second season. We don’t want our world saviors to be human, Fox, they have to be more than that, or what is there left to aspire to. Idiots.

Just because they add a new personality to a show does not mean that the show is going to be bad. It is quite possible that this new love interest will be a good thing. The character was suggested by FOX, but the writers will put words into her mouth and guide her actions based on what will work with the story. Sure, FOX will have some input, but if the writers are good (as they have already proved with Season 1) then they will rise to the challenge of a new character. Let’s give this girl a chance and not throw her to the T-800s just yet.

The problem is not with a new personality, it’s with the power FOX have to do ANYTHING to influence this show in the first place. I would like the idea of the new GF had the writers come up with it in the first place, but the fact that FOX came up with it and used it as leverage to keep the show on the air, and they’re making the GF clueless to John’s alternate life -which is just dumb, and plausible deniability goes right out the window at this point-, tells me there will be more direction from FOX in the future.

Mark my words, here, if they directed the entry of a GF, they’ll be in charge of directing her actions and words, as well. I’m not saying it will, necessarily, kill the show, but just like SoE with Star Wars Galaxies, the outlook is not good.
