McG Talks Terminator Salvation Ending, Plus Sequels

Remember that ridiculous sounding ending we spoiled for you all those months ago? It seems pretty safe to say that that was most definitely the ending they were going with BEFORE the ending leaked onto the Net and pissed off just about everyone in the world who ever loved the Terminator franchise. Word was, the backlash was so rough and so instantaneous that the studio forced the filmmakers to rewrite a new ending and shoot it. In an interview with MTV, McG seems to hint that that awful, awful sounding ending is still in full effect, or at least, parts of it.
Here is that excerpt from the MTV interview:
“If we have good fortune we have indeed planned out two more ‘Terminator’ pictures,” explained the director, keeping his fingers crossed that “Salvation” opens strongly on May 21st. “There’s an arc of story [in the new sequels].”
This arc will be left open with the ending of “Salvation,” which will point to a “Terminator 5” film. “The ending is indeed elliptical,” McG told us. ‘And it challenges the audience. It’s not a happy little bow of an ending at all. The ending is tough and requires reflection, and in some degrees it bifurcates the audience. You walk back to the car and one person thinks it means this, and the other person thinks it means that.”
“Bifurcates”, according to my Webster dictionary, means “to cause to divide into two branches or parts”. How do you “divide” an audience? By giving them the kind of ending that was revealed in the SPOILERS posted here, that’s how.
I was concerned about “Terminator Salvation” when they hired McG, but I got over it after seeing the trailers, and now after hearing him talk, I’m once again concerned. Are they really going to FUBAR the franchise’s mythology in favor of some twist ending? Would they really do that?
We’ll all find out May 21st.

They had better not ruin this. All this hinting at undesirable endings is not good for the fans we need absolute assurance this wont stink.
Just saw the movie without reading any of these spoilers beforehand. I totally felt that the ending was so out of place and actually thought in my head that Marcus replacing John Connor would be so suitable. I mean, how the hell do you explain a human being able to take down a t800 and reprogramming him to be a protector for young John Connor? Making John Connor a terminator himself thats how! The passing of the heart thing was no good. I mean seriously they can do heart transplants on the fly like that? don’t you have to consider they are not even compatable? I think the killing of John Connor was a risk the studio should have taken. Oh well
Man quit whining why would you want a desireable ending to sacrifice a complex ending or a death that has meaning for something cliché it’s not even out and every one is prejudice towards this film because it’s a franchise
* a possible complex
Ah christ, lets face it, MCG’s ideal of people walking away from the cinema in until somebody perks up and says “Well that means….” only for somebody to say “No? It means that….” will leave us all feeling hollow and unsatisfied that T4 is a movie in itself.
I mean what everyone wants from the Terminator franchise in terms of films, where an apocolypic budget is available to hire the best actors and writers money can buy, is a film at least on par with T2. Will we get this? From MCG?
No…. not even close…
The T3 writers have all been hired for T4.
If the people putting up the money haven’t read how much everyone hated T3, and still decided to hire those writers, then they obviously don’t know talent.
Michael Ferris – T3, Catwoman, Aeon Flux
John D Brancato – T3, Catwoman, Aeon Flux???
If these two are a pair, then they are in a partnership of self delusion in there ability to write a decent story.
Catwoman was such a poor movie, I actually walked out the cinema. Aeon Flux was so poor words can only scratch the surface in describing its faults as a motion picture.
u actualy went to see catwoman? that really is the worst idea anyone ever came up with
i put my trust completly in christian bale i assume he would not have played in it if the script sucked that much… except for the leaked out ending that spits in every terminator lovers face well spit…. id rather say pisses
this movie sounds worse everyday
well most likely a little twist…suspence type ending. I think they are fully aware they cant mess this up. I dont think thats their intentions. McG has enough wait on his shoulders.
Weel I agree with Mr. Damien, it sucks everyday, they already ruined everything, Terminator for me is only untill T2-3D, created by Cameron, the rest is Bull shiet, which by the way I never watched, I live in a small city here in Brazil, Only in my dreams go to T23D in Orlando, Why they instead of recreate the whole stuff, they don’t make a DVD of T23D with an extra history, Ohhh my, I forgot, the Producers are so Greedy, God save us.
I think I’ll withhold judgment until I see the film. I’ve really liked what I saw in the trailers, thus far, and personally I didn’t think Aeon Flux or T3 were -when taken for entertainment value- all that bad. Indeed, I think Aeon Flux was pretty damn good. T3 needed some help, though, and I think putting these two writers on T4, or anything else having to do with the Terminator franchise, was an amazingly huge mistake. The writing needs to be gritty, hard, like the first Terminator, and I think T3 and, with these writers, T4, have not, nor will they ever be, appropriate homage to Cameron’s original work, or the universe as it should be.
I’ll pay them my $7.50, or less if I can get away with it, but if it’s ass, even for pure entertainment value, then McG and those writers, the producers, everyone involved with the farce will go down in history as some of the worst film makers ever. With the sheer size of the Terminator ‘public’, I would be surprised if they ever work on this kind of film again.
From what I’ve seen in the trailers, McG has the right idea, but there’s so much I haven’t seen, as yet, that I can’t make an appropriate assessment. I hope it will be excellent, both for entertainment and story value.
I like the sound of McG’s ending. Get off his d#ck.
If they make a new trilogy out this, they better make it count!
“The T3 writers have all been hired for T4.”
That is indeed troubling. T2 had real depth and imagining, but T3 was pointless. T3 entertainment value? ok if you leave your brain at the door and only watch it once, but T3 was too ridiculous. There better not be any old trucks that drive themselves in T4.
what’s worse? terminator chronicles or T3?
Definelly Terminator Salvation will be worse than T3 and chronicles togheter, I’m sure about it, have you people watched Charlie Angels? Well is the same director who made that, I fell pity of Christian Bale, after doing so great works, he now is involved with the biggest Crap in the Whole year, McG, I think I hate this guy, he doesn’t care, he really doesn’t care abou us, the fans…
Charlie’s Angels wasn’t my thing, either, but it was done exactly as it was supposed to be done, goofy, outrageous, cinematic, and action. McG, despite my personal feelings for the movie, did that movie the way it was meant to be done.
The episodes he’s done of Chuck and Supernatural are award-winning episodes; I LOVE Chuck, apart from Terminator and Ghost Hunters, it’s the only show I watch.
We Are Marshall was magnificent, very well done indeed. He caught the essence of the time period, as it should have been. Although his codex isn’t very strong, I’m not going to discount the guy until I see how Terminator 4 comes out. Come on, guys, just because T: SCC may be done doesn’t mean we have to bash T4; go see the movie before you make a real judgment, please?
I thought Jonah Nolan wrote Salvation? Anyhow, if that is the ending the are using that is horrible. The whole story of John Conner is how he inspired the human resistance and the only way the story holds weight is if A human is doing it!!
I have to agree with you, Adam, but again, let’s see where this goes.
I don’t know, I don’t know I’m very anxious indeed, but I was llike that in T3, and I went very disaponted, Christian Bale already told that the movie sucks, he disagree with McG for a lot of reasons, Christian Bale told to everyone hear he will not work with Mcg again, think about, a trilogy without John Connor? bring us the third season of Sarah connor. Moto terminator, for Christ sake, even the idea is Crap, don’t you see?
Jedi… where did you get this information? I would like to read it as well, please?
Well have you not heard him on you tube? Look for Christian Bale besercs on set of McG Salvation, he even call the whole group of filmakers of Unprofessional, Have a Look.
Everything because the Lightining techinician enter during a scene when it was been recording, correct me if I’m wrong, Christian asks for McG if he was not right? And what McG replys, Ididn’t seen it, McG isn’t directing anything, he just wants his money, for Christ safe, I thinhk he is a lier, Hope I’m wrong, but all the time I heard anything good about salvation, comes something really bad, or a new strange information about it, I really think it’s gonna be crap, i think I’m gonna prefer watch Terminator and Judgement day agin.
I feel sorry for Christian, this one i KNOW SINCE i WATCHED HIM IN eMPIRE OF sUN, DID YOU KNOW THATsPIELBERG WHO FINDS cHRISTIAN bALE? wELL mCg DONE A MEDIUM MOVIE, AND A LOT OF STUPIDITY WITH cHARLIE aNGELS AND BAD STUFF, wHO i TRUST, i TRUST IN wHO HAVE TALENT, NOT in some jokers, and greedy guys who doesn’t even respect a movie SET or in a director who doesn’t pay attention o his own SET, for Christ safe, I think he is a jerk, again, hope I’m complete wrong abou this issue, I want Terminator back, but to come another T3, or a worse movie, I give up, let’s call for Cameron, back to the originals.
Wow… slow your roll there, JV. That entire rant was not about T4 being a pissy movie, or about McG being a terrible director, it was all about Bale’s supposed ‘friend’ taking photos, not a lighting tech at all, walking around where he shouldn’t have been. Bale is the prick is this instance, and nothing is said about McG or the film, so take it easy there, stud.
See the movie before you get too excited over nothing -mountain from a mole-hill sort of reaction- and THEN make a decision. Sounds to me like you’re getting an ulcer, so you’re too close to this, and need to step back a bit and wait. Besides, the kind of thing you’re doing here will only lead to hysteria where none needs be, at least not for another 31 days.
Should be asleep by now, so good night.
Yeah you are all right Paul, I was joking you know, I really want watch this movie, and have my own conclusion, I don’t care if it’s good or not, it’s a Terminator movie, that is the cool thing, I will watch it and have my own conclusion, if it’s Good, I will be a lot of glad, and pray for more, if goes badly, it’s ok, i will always have the originals to watch in Blue-Ray now, better quality of sound and image, In fact I’m really anxious,, one month seens so far, but I will keep my patience, There is no Fate… my friend Paul, be nice.
I can’t wait anymore, and producers, please send us a third season of Terminator, for Christ sake, everybody loved the serie, so cut off the suspense ok.
Hey Paul, Isee that you are a terminator fan just like me, a real loyal of the series, since 1984, let me ask you, do you know when there will be the release of the Terminator Salvation soundtrack by Danny Elfman? Let me know ok, Thanks.
Skynet is not trying to kill humanity, but augment it with improvements it decided to incorporate into our bodies without our consent, thus Marcus from the future, he is the end product sent back to convince Connor to stop the fighting.
Hey you told right now, at this moment the whole plot o Salvation, kkkkkkkKkkKKkkkkk, Why? The end is know, why watch the movie, Thanks, great special effects I’m sure it will happened, and a stupid end like that.
JV, you’re alright, man. It just seemed like you were getting pretty excited there, bub.
I didn’t know until just now that Danny Elfman is doing the soundtrack. I hope he doesn’t make it sound clowny, like he did with the first Batman films and many of the soundtracks he’s done since. I like Danny Elfman, but I don’t think he’ll produce anything hard enough to represent Terminator. And, unfortunately, I have no idea when the soundtrack is going to come out. Sorry, JV.
Matt, the original story has always been the future war against the machine, nothing more grandiose than that; if, indeed, this is what McG is doing, I may also be very sadly disappointed. I can’t wait to see what it will be, though.
Hey friend Paul, I heard that some clues of the Danny Elfman’s soundtrack can be heard in the second and the Four TV-Spot of Salvation, well looks awesome what I heard, some clues are present also in the game site, and the Salvation site (Have a Look).
I guess you are avoiding spoilers right? Well, I’m not, so I will take care of what I can or not talk here ok, Have you watchewd the Trailer of the Game, and the video of Introduction? Go to Gametrailers.com and type Terminator Salvation on the search Button, Ohhhh, you will gonna be crazy about, terminator Rules, if I find anything about the soundtrack release I post here ok, friend, see you.
Thank you, JV, I look forward to it.
Yeah, I’m trying to stay away from spoilers… I want to see the movie as fresh as possible.
“what’s worse? terminator chronicles or T3?” Terminator chronicles is awesome! And will most likely be so incredibly better than both T3 and Salvation that it won’t even be prudent to compare them. The movie is being directed by the guy who did charlie’s angels and has the writers from T3! This is going to be a disaster! TSCC season 3!
It looks like they’re going in the direction of TSCC with the whole John Henry thing. I kind of like that they are changing it up a little because the John Connor must live in order for man kind to survive because the rest of the world is to weak to survive without him thing was getting kind of old. I know people get stuck in their ways but sometimes change can be a good thing.

Hey Matt, I like this idea of yours.. I could fit perfectly, even though it reminds me of the Matrix.
So Skynet would in time change it’s mind and, instead of exterminating humanity, decide to improve it with endoskeletal prosthetics? Could be. It would have it’s depht: we’d become immortal but artificial humans and, since we’d have a chip we could be controlled…
Either that or Marcus is the perfect infiltrator from the farthest future, one capable of fooling everyone to believe he really thinks he is (or at least was) human in order to gain Connor’s trust and, if not kill him, push him to make certain decisions that will somehow favor Skynet..
Plus, if Marcus is, and he is, a Terminator of unknown origin and model, he still should have a microchip… (or a human brain in a metal skull like Robocop) So he should have a programming… And what would that be? Can he really be free to decide his own existence and allegiance? Can we think of him as a failed experiment? would Skynet just toss him away like that even if he was? Or is he a successful experiment, a hybrid.
We’ll see.
What we do know is that field Terminators will come out of the 600 and 700 line (700s resemble the 800s, main difference is they’re bigger and have metal teeth. 800s have white ones becaus they’re supposed to have a skin covering for infiltration: if they had metal teeth they would’t fool anyone…), and the 800 model, the Resistance Infiltrator Prototype (T-R.I.P.), will make his appearance, possibly sooner that expected by Connor: this would mean that if it goes into mass production the war is over.
slavation will be better hen the orginalls thanks to Nolans script and ba’le’s performance
hopefully that ending is just a frenzy to build up the hype with the mad fanboys.
I’ve just watched thre sceanes of the film released by WArner, one of then have some “generals” and a order, (No spoiler, you have to see it for yourself) But was amazing, really surprised me, no kiding, gave a view never thought about the Terminator series, changed my mind, now I had a glimpse of hope for what comes… Cool.

What was all that about?
Di che si tratta esattamente?
I was ttalking only about the sceane with the generals, but once that the T-600 appears on screem I come back to rethink the film as I was glimpsing before, sorry, but bad flag, the truth is, just this sceane were cool on the Warner releases, forget, I’m still guessing the film will sucks, but I like you, want to have hope.
Frank, I think you’re smoking crack; battlefield expediency doesn’t allow for compatibility testing. This is not the modern world, this is the future world where hell reigns and you take every chance you get to make something right, or make it work.
I’ll have to come back and address the other posts later… going out, now.
afaik McG directs on Supernatural which btw is the best TV series ever.
He might have had bad work in the past, but hes done some good aswell, and you cant count a bad production soley on 1 person.
I watched Terminator Salvation Friday the 29th at 0020, and I totally disliked it in every way possible—and I love Terminator 3, believe it or not. The script for T4 is plain awful with no character development whatsoever. The acting was average, at best, with the exception of Sam Worthington, of course. He’s the only reason this movie is watchable.
I’d rather have Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles any day over McG’s poor attempt in T4. I completely adore T:TSCC, by the way.
Now, I’ve never been a fan of Mr. Bale. The only reason he did so well in Batman—or Batman did well with him in it—is due to the well-written screenplay and the excellent directing. The Dark Knight, for instance, was entertaining because of Heath Ledger’s Joker powerful portrayal, the awesome script, and Christopher Nolan’s directorial magic. Mr. Ledger’s unfortunate and premature death was a big factor too—it’s the reason I watched this movie in the first place. I knew choosing Christian Bale to play Connor was a bad idea. It’s difficult to get into his and Tom Cruise’s characters these days.
Now, the war isn’t won in Salvation, unfortunately—the resistance merely wins a battle. T4 has the “To be continued…” phrase written all over it, provided it does well in the theaters and/or DVD sales.
If they dare make another Terminator movie—you know they will—hopefully they choose a different director, someone with more experience and proven in storytelling. And definitely hire better screenwriters this time around. Terminator Salvation was just too sloppy for my taste.
I move was great. I didn’t like the ending.
Is is worth watching? Yes
