Brian Austin Green Lands on Smallville as Metallo

Well, if Brian Austin Green can’t keep playing Derek Reese on The Sarah Connor Chronicles, at least he’s landed himself a pretty nice gig over at the CW, where TV Guide reports that BAG will be playing the Superman villain Metallo in at least the first two episodes of the show’s upcoming...

Wow, this is interesting. I didn’t even know Shirley Manson, the lead singer of the Scottish alternative rock band Garbage could act! Well apparently she can, because it’s officially reported that Manson has joined the cast of The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ Season 2, and not just as a one-shot deal, either. She’ll be joining the show as a regular castmember. (Or at least, until Cameron breaks her neck and throws her into the trunk, as she’s wont to do.)

More about Manson’s character from Reuters:

Scottish musician Shirley Manson, lead singer with the rock group Garbage, has joined the cast of Fox’s “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” which begins its second season in the fall.

The flame-haired vocalist will play Catherine Weaver, the CEO of a cutting-edge high-tech company. The “Terminator” movie spinoff stars Lena Headey in the title role and youngster Thomas Dekker as future rebel leader John Connor.

Shirley Manson, the singer of “I’m Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl” will be playing a CEO of a high-tech company! Now I’ve seen everything. No doubt said high-tech company will feature prominently into the creation of Skynet and the Terminators, all the more reason for Cameron to introduce Manson’s character to the trunk of her car very soon.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles returns in the Fall for FOX.

I find it amazing that Shirley Manson has become a part of TSCC, why bicker about male V female characters. In the end it is a sci-fi show, so why be fanatical. I enjoy it and I don’t get why some get “on there high horse” about who is part of a sci-fi show. Get back to reality, enjoy the show for what it is, it is only entertainment and nothing to get your nickers in a knot.

Wow,
Now I’m a red blooded male just like the rest of you?
But I have no problem with female leads and as for society being hard wired for men being in control?
Prove it.
I will debate you on this Paul whenever you have the time, but in the meantime, stop coming up with stupid nonsensical arguments to justify what is ultimately a chauvinistic point of view. Or have you forgotten in your haste to PROVE your point that at least half the members of this forum are female?
I’m not sure what school you graduated from, but they obviously ignored Celtic, American Indian, Germanic, Slavic and many other cultures. Tracing it back far enough we can find plenty of strong heroines, who were quite warlike and more than capable of taking charge.
Hard wired? Whose hard wiring are we talking about, your petty little prejudices or genuine hard wiring?
Go back to school.
Cheers,
Alastair

Paul,

Wow, that is a pretty bold statement.

You wrote: “I don’t think it’s so much a sexist view or a matter of generational societal training, as it is a matter of human nature. We are hard-wired, from the beginning of mankind, for men to be in charge of everything, and a great deal of adjustment has had to be made to come as far as we have, to defeat or confound the hard-wiring as much as possible.”

I am particularly interested in your assertion that humans are “hard wired for men to be in charge of everything.” This sounds as if it is a quantifiable statement. Can you provide references to current peer reviewed scientific studies which back this assertion up? I graduated a few years ago from a major university with my degree in Sociology. I don’t recall any mention of your quote. Has there been some scientific break through recently?

As to your assertion that having a strong female cast makes shows tank, have you ever scene a little show called “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” 7 seasons I think, almost all leads were female.

Now I will agree with you in that statistically, more CEO’s are male than female. By far. But, it is not as if there are zero female CEO’s or that thy are rare. So, there is no reason why one cannot be featured.

Finally, as a red blooded straight male, I truly appreciate more women in entertainment. What can I say, but that she is hot.

Sit back and enjoy the show, because ultimately the show is based on the notion that a MAN, John Connor will save the world from the machines.

Oooh… I’m watching ONLY to see my favorite singer Shirley. I can’t wait =)

They seem to be on a roll with this series. I enjoy that tough girl stuff, I’m in.

I believe she would suceed because she is a very strong willed women if I were you guys I would keep my mouth shut and wait till the show starts I give shirley kudos!

Shirley Manson will bring carisma, attitude and strength to her character as she is all of those things.

In my opinion that I why they chose her for that leadership role. I you know of Shirley as much as i do you will realise that.

On stage she is captivating, everyone is looking at her even through the music is amazing and unique. They are drawn to her by her confidence, persona and the wide range of emotions she can express. She can express the deepest darkest evil to the sweetest cutest sympathy.

She is much much more than a pretty face*

Hey flyingfish,
Good to see you’re back! But you always said you’d be back didn’t you:-)
Great to see your comments gracing the forum again. Looking forward to more.
Cheers,
Alastair

Jeez, I haven’t been here in a few, and now Shirley Manson is in Season 2! Nice!! I’m actually a big fan of Garbage, well the band that is. That’s good news, I’m curious to check out her acting skills, interesting if I may say. I’m just a bit curious why is FOX snagging people across the pond? Whatever they I’m sure it’ll be great. I’m happy when it rain and happier with season 2, fingers cross.

Most Sci fi type are guys, typically working for annoying guys. That is the reality most scifi fans endure

Watching a bunch of babes plot (or trying to thwart) the downfall of humanity is an excellent reasons to blow 45 minutes. Would you really like to see some jerk, megomaniac guy plotting the downfall of us all? Sounds more like CNN.

And a very pretty face it is too!
I’m from Scotland so it’s doubly good to see her on the show.
Cheers,
Alastair

Garbage actually aren’t from Scotland, they’re from Madison, Wisconsin. Only Shirley is from Scotland, the rest of the boys are from these parts.

I’ve had a crush on Shirley since “Only Happy When It Rains” was playing on MTV (back when they showed videos, anyone remember those days?). So I have zero complaint about another beautiful face gracing this already enjoyable TV show!

I think you’d better check biological history. You’re trying to stick up for a point of view that is false. Have a nice day.

We aren’t actually hard wired from the beginning of mankind for male leads, that’s actually a Semite view that influenced the early Greeks, and from the Greeks the Romans took their view of women. The Romans didn’t actually pioneer anything to be honest, they just borrowed other innovations and called them their own.
Matriarchal societies are actually older than patriarchal societies. The development of human society can be traced from a gradual move from matriarchal society to patriarchal in Europe anyway. Women were seen as leaders in Iron Age Europe, take Boudica, Veleda, Cartimandua, Chiomara amongst many others. It was actually the rise of the Roman Catholic church, which was only an extension of the patriarchal Roman empire that saw the subjugation of women.
What we are seeing in the late 20th and early 21st century is not a political correctness and I’m not politically correct by the way, but we are seeing the cycle of human development come full circle whereby women can take the lead again without being tied to stakes and burned or crucified or thrown to the lions. Think about these things before you say we are hard wired to look to male leads, we’re actually getting back to the way things were.
And getting back to TSCC, the idea of a good female terminator has solid archetypal resonances with ancient mythology, the god of war in Celtic society was female, a battle maiden is a common archetype, as is a female CEO. I don’t have a problem with Shirley Manson playing a female CEO. That’s called breaking the barriers and moving the terminator mythology onwards and upwards instead of staying in the same tired mold.
Alastair

Well, different people like different things, though for my experience, unless a show is well-established -and T: SCC is far from well-established- female leaders tend to make shows tank. I don’t think it’s so much a sexist view or a matter of generational societal training, as it is a matter of human nature. We are hard-wired, from the beginning of mankind, for men to be in charge of everything, and a great deal of adjustment has had to be made to come as far as we have, to defeat or confound the hard-wiring as much as possible.

Again, I don’t mind seeing a female lead -Lena Headey-, though I suppose it would be nice -more than just being tired of not seeing men in charge- to know that women don’t own everything in the world. That’s the best way I could think to put that… I’ve never been known to be very PC; in fact, I friggin’ hate politically correct.

Oh I don’t know Paul, most of the stories I write have strong female leads, I think it’s a breath of fresh air and that’s coming from a red blooded male, plenty of female CEOs in real life and I’m tired of seeing testosterone laden heroes battling it out, let’s see more female leads.
Alastair

I don’t think so. She’ll probably have a few choice lines, show off her pretty face all tightened up like someone stretched her skin over her cheeks, and then Cameron will shove her in the trunk.

On the other hand, I read a synopsis somewhere -may have been here- about the group finding a believer-patron sometime close to the show starting up, someone to help them fight Skynet. Not sure how that will pan out, but is this the lady that’s supposed to be the patron? Hmmm….

I don’t think about her like a CEO Tech Inc… I ask, she’s gonna singing too?

Okay, this crap is getting out of hand. I’m all for strong female leads and corporate leadership getting slammed on TV, but when was the last time anyone saw a male CEO. Frankly, this is one downfall in science fiction, is that they cater to what’s politically correct instead of what’s really correct, and it makes the stories somewhat unbelievable and people stop watching.

Yeah, that covers it.
